This exhibition titled “Work on Work” is the culmination of a research project which several poignant questions about the future of the workplaces in the coming century. “Is the generic office building with its ever-present typical plan still part of the next century? What is the future of the office building type if it is not?” Given that single use office buildings take up so much of the real estate in our cities, what would the urban impact be if their DNA were to change? As public space becomes more interiorized and privatized, how can architectural interiors proactively affect urban space? Is there an opportunity to establish a vigilant hyper-localism to offset the ubiquitous global interior of sameness that permeates the global capital centers across the world? Working together with UCLA’s CityLAB this project researches the history and contemporary evolution of the office, to propose answers, predictions and proposals for the future of work though the lenses of inquire proposed above.
