The premier center for new media, the Halifax School must be a catalyst for new ideas. These new ideas are not tied to existing technology, but instead push existing technologies to their limit and demand the creation of new technology and methods of communication. New technologies are being developed by communities of people with a shared purpose through open source movements, such as Processing and ChucK. Going beyond open source data sharing, we propose an open building, where physical components can be developed and shared and deployed around the world for increased flexibility and collaborative possibilities. This typology promotes a constant exchange of information not only between students at the school, but also the world at large, thereby promoting the development of radical new media art that engages the global community.
